Frozen Shoulder: What Causes It, and Can Massage Help?

Reaching for a shelf, putting on a jacket, or getting comfortable at night can become surprisingly difficult when your shoulder feels stuck. Frozen shoulder can turn these everyday movements into a challenge.

What is frozen shoulder?

Frozen shoulder is the common name for adhesive capsulitis. The capsule surrounding the shoulder joint becomes inflamed, thickened, and tight. Scarring and adhesions can develop, limiting movement.

Adhesive capsulitis names the condition itself; it is not a separate cause of frozen shoulder. The changes in the joint capsule explain the stiffness, while the reason those changes begin is not always clear. Johns Hopkins Medicine

Why does it happen?

Frozen shoulder may develop without an obvious trigger. It can also occur after an injury or surgery, particularly when the shoulder has been kept still. Diabetes and thyroid conditions are associated with increased risk. Having a risk factor does not mean you will necessarily develop frozen shoulder. AAOS

Is frozen shoulder the same as a rotator cuff tear?

A rotator cuff tear involves a tendon; frozen shoulder involves the joint capsule. Both can cause pain and difficulty moving the arm, and they can occur together.

Frozen shoulder typically limits both movement you produce yourself and movement performed with assistance. That pattern helps clinicians assess the problem, but it cannot confirm a diagnosis on its own. A medical examination helps distinguish capsular stiffness from tendon injury and other causes of shoulder pain. Ohio State clinical guideline

Can massage help with frozen shoulder?

Massage should be considered supportive care, with realistic goals discussed after assessment. It should not be advertised as breaking apart adhesions inside the capsule, repairing a torn tendon, or curing frozen shoulder.

Any hands-on work should respect your symptoms and coordinate with your clinician’s rehabilitation plan. Trying to force a painful shoulder through restricted movement is not a shortcut to recovery.

Treatment commonly includes prescribed movement and physical therapy, with medication or injections considered by a medical clinician. Recovery can be gradual. MedlinePlus
